Jim Brokaw
Former Staff Sergeant with the Nebraska State Patrol Carrier Enforcement Division
Jim is currently the Safety Coordinator for a large agri-business cooperative in central Nebraska. He is responsible for training on DOT requirements and ensuring regulatory compliance. Prior to his venture into the private sector in 2007, he served for over 20 years with the Nebraska State Patrol.
Jim joined the Carrier Enforcement Division of the Nebraska State Patrol in September 1984 and for more than 12 years, worked both permanent and portable scales. His last assignment was as the Carrier Enforcement Division’s Staff Sergeant, which included serving as instructor for the Nebraska State Patrol Training Academy instructing recruit officers in Carrier Enforcement functions, CDL and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.
From 1995, until his departure from the Patrol, Jim was also an Associate Instructor with FMCSA’s National Training Center for North American Standard Safety Inspections.
Hours of Service PowerPoint Presentations
In addition to helping with updating the current Hours-of-Service presentation on Ol’ Blue, USA’s website, Brokaw created a PowerPoint presentation in 2003, and then again in 2005, as training tools on the new Hours-of-Service regulations. These were condensed versions of his training materials used during in-service training for Nebraska State Patrol troopers on these regulations. He also used the 2003 and 2005 PowerPoint for several Hours-of-Service seminars held across Nebraska and at The Truck Show – Las Vegas in 2007.
Ol’ Blue, USA was so impressed with these presentations that they asked Brokaw to put together a presentation in 2003 and again in 2005 that drivers and fleets could identify with. This presentation, with the permission of the Nebraska State Patrol, was provided to Ol’ Blue, USA for its Website only
Notes from Ol’ Blue, USA:
In March of 2008, Brokaw’s logbook presentation was awarded the Bronze Award in the Internet category, along with a Gold Award in Radio for the “Ask The Law”™ radio program for the 3rd year in a row and a Silver Award for Magazine Writing - Public Service for the “Ask The Law”™ Q & A print column, from the Truck Writers of North America (TWNA). To view all the awards that Brokaw has received working with Ol' Blue, USA, go to http://www.olblueusa.org/credits4.html
On December 27, 2007, FMCSA changed the Hours-of-Service again; this rule temporarily reinstates the two provisions (11-hour driving and the 34-hour restart) while the agency gathers public comment on its actions and the underlying safety analysis before issuing a final rule.
Once again, Ol’ Blue, USA asked Brokaw for help in putting together another Logbook presentation.
